"Rejoice, Zevulun, in your going out, and Yissachar, in your tents."
— Devarim 33:18
אור החיים הקדוש
The Ohr HaChaim's Perspective
Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar, on the partnership of Tomchim
"שמח זבולון בצאתך ויששכר באהליך"
"Rejoice, Zevulun, in your going out, and Yissachar, in your tents." (Devarim 33:18)
The Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh teaches that the Torah deliberately mentions Zevulun before Yissachar — even though Yissachar was the elder brother and the one immersed in Torah. Why is the supporter named first?
Because, the Ohr HaChaim explains, without Zevulun there is no Yissachar. The one who enables Torah learning is the very foundation upon which that Torah stands. The merchant who labors so that the scholar may sit undisturbed in his tent does not receive a lesser share — he receives an equal share in every word of Torah his partner learns, as if he had learned it himself.
Furthermore, the Ohr HaChaim emphasizes that this is not charity (tzedakah) — it is a true partnership (shutfut). Both partners are joined in a single, indivisible spiritual enterprise. The reward is not split; it is doubled — each receives the full merit of what was accomplished together.
"Therefore," writes the Ohr HaChaim, "Zevulun is mentioned first — for through his going out into the world, Yissachar is able to dwell in his tent of Torah, and the merit of that Torah belongs to both of them, in equal measure, for all eternity."
This is the partnership we offer you — not a donation, but an eternal share in the Torah of a full-time scholar.
